Gravel bike tour

Group departure: custom dates for a minimum of 4 participants

Time is key in our lives, and this is also true in a bike tour where you'll touch places rich in history.

Treat yourself for the moment: pedal, stop, breathe.

Ride, slow down, and watch.

Eat, drink, relax, laugh, pedal, and recover.

Discover the beauty of cycling rolling hills, seaside coastal roads, ancient villages, and peaceful paths.

West Sicily gravel bike tour lets you ride the Western corner of Sicily in a mix of places with different characteristics that often give the feeling of being in another time. Greek ruins and old art pieces are mixed with extensive views of open landscapes, and ruins of abandoned villages are combined with Baroque churches.

You can run the trip self-guided, with luggage transfer and technical support, or in a group with your friends with our guide and van support.

Day by Day program

DAY1: Welcome to Trapani

Independent arrival to Trapani, a town located west of Palermo. Your accommodation is in the pedestrian area of the city's historical center and close to the port. This is the perfect position for early morning arrival if you want to add a daily excursion at one of the close Egadi Islands. Our representative here will deliver and fit your bike in the afternoon.

DAY2: Trapani to Mazara del Vallo 66km - 425m el gain

Today's ride is easy to the south of the island; it includes the last section by the sea; your accommodation is in the center of the town. A fascinating part of the old town is the Casbah, established by the Arabs; this is a great place to get traditional fish couscous. Arab-Norman architecture is visible in town on the lovely Cathedral, designed with Roman, Greek, and Baroque details crowned by blue mosaic domes

DAY3: Poggioreale ruins and open views. 65km - 1200m el gain

Today we'll ride into the heart of Belice Valley, between the provinces of Trapani and Palermo. The area was affected by a big earthquake on the night of June 15th, 1968; the towns of Santa Ninfa, Gibellina, Partanna, Poggioreale, and Salemi were the ones that had the most significant damage to lives and buildings. We'll cross the area and see the vast commemorative building called Cretto di Burri and the ruins of Poggioreale and Gibellina that - aside from the sad event - give us an idea of how the architecture and the places were at that moment.

DAY4: Entella, an Elymian settlement. 33km - 490m el gain

Short ride this morning to enjoy the area more and visit the archaeological site of Entella, an Elymian settlement. The Elymians were the population that inhabited this corner of Sicily before the invasion of the Greeks (III-IV a.C) and founded Entella, Erice, and Segesta. You'll have time to explore the site and enjoy the stunning views of the valley. Our accommodation for the night is an agriturismo wine producer. Dinner and breakfast are included.

DAY5: Segesta and Castellammare. 39km - 600m el gain

This morning you'll have the opportunity to visit one of the most iconic Sicilian places: the archaeological site of Segesta.

After Segesta, we'll have less than twenty km almost downhill to get Castellammare, our final destination for today, back to the coast.

DAY6: Back to Trapani 59km - 1030m el gain

The last ride is one of the most astonishing of this trip on the West of Sicily. It takes us to the little hamlet of Scopello first, where you may like to stop to have a coffee at the "baglio" (Fortified farm dating from the 1500s) and up the Zingaro Park by an old "trazzera" that will finally take us to the area of Makari, Custonaci, and finally back to Trapani, different accommodation than the first day of the trip.

Breakfast and end of our services.

How to extend your Western Sicily gravel bike tour

Take your time to explore this vivid town, rich in complexity. The extension tour package includes one night in a 4* accommodation in downtown and a guided tour of the city to understand better the history and the cross of cultures that have mixed here for centuries.

Or, you may add a pre-tour extension in Erice, the lovely medieval town on the top of a solo mountain overlooking Trapani and mostly of the Sicily western coastline. Erice is connected with Trapani by a cable car and is one of Sicily's most beautiful old villages.

The extension tour includes an overnight in this medieval town and dinner at our favorite boutique and family-run hotel.

Regarding difficulty, the trip includes uphills and some long rides, so the trip is for intermediate or above-level riders.

In the self-guided version, we'll provide luggage transport.

The guided group version includes our guide with the support vehicle.
